The Front Yard of Our Home Remodel – Before and After

Home Remodel Time

The front yard of our home remodel definitely took more physical labor than any other project on this house. And that had mainly to do with dirt. Lots and lots of dirt.

The hardest part of this project was finding free dirt on craigslist, driving to the location, shoveling tons (literally TONS, as in the weight sense of the word) of dirt, driving back home, and shoveling the dirt out of the truck, onto our front lawn we were extending, and then shoveling it around to even it out and then stomping on it to compact it, and doing it again, and again, and again. We also added more dirt at the top of the hill to make it a bit safer.

I couldn’t even tell you how many truck loads of dirt we shoveled and hauled. Thinking back it had to be at least 10 truckloads, but I think more… And it was TOUGH! If you want to lose weight, shovel dirt in and out of a truck. And you’d think that shoveling the dirt out of the truck would be a lot easier, but it wasn’t. The entire process was physically difficult and extremely tiring.

And now, without further ado, I’m going to show you all the before and after pics of the front yard of our home remodel.

  • Removed the palm tree
  • Removed a bunch of other old ugly out-of-place bushes, plants, trees, stumps, weeds, etc
  • Broke the cement wall
  • Built a new wall out of castle bricks to extend the lawn
  • Truckloads of dirt
  • Installed sprinkler system
  • Built meandering stairway out of castle bricks
  • Built and painted planter boxes at the top of the hill
  • Built and painted an arbor
  • Destroyed the tile porch
  • Built new posts for the porch overhang with added character
  • Created a new one level front porch area out of red bricks
  • Extended the wood steps at the bottom of the driveway in the porch area
  • Planted new bushes, flowers, and a tree
  • Planted and grew a fresh lawn
  • Built and painted new fence along the side of the steep driveway
  • Built new mailbox stand, replaced mailbox
  • Added mulch to dirt areas
  • Caulked any cracks and holes on the house siding
  • Painted the house gray and repainted the trim a bright white
