What Is Bondera, You Ask?

Bondera is a tiling adhesive that is used in place of that sticky messy, hard-to-work-with mortar. Not only is it a lot cleaner, it’s also easier and faster to tile with, AND you can grout that same day, whereas with mortar you have to wait at least 24 hours for it to dry before you can grout. And who likes waiting?

Also, when using Bondera, if the phone rings while you’re tiling you can walk away from your project and come back later, whereas with mortar you couldn’t do such a thing! Your mortar would be all dried up by the time you came back!

So with all of these benefits, I can barely even see a reason to ever use mortar again! lol! But there are some things bondera isn’t made for so you should check before you start a huge tiling project.

What Did I Use Bondera For?

I decided I wanted to make something cool for my yard and I finally came up with making a self-stenciled Spanish-style tile art piece as a focal point near our gate entryway to make our home more welcoming.

So I bought a 2′x4′ piece of thin plywood to adhere the tiles to:

I bought some 1″x3″s to use as framing for the completed project and I lay one down along one edge:

I bought those little 4″x4″ white ceramic tiles that are only 13 cents each and I put four tiles across at the top, 8 tiles down, then 4 more across at the bottom (I used nickels as tile spacers which actually worked out perfectly!):

Then I was able to draw lines of where to cut the plywood to the proper size:

Then I had my marks for where to cut:

So Kyle cut the plywood for me, because, as we all know by now, I don’t use the circular saw:

How to Use Bondera

First I measured the area I was going to lay the tiles so I could cut the bondera to size:

Then, using a ultility knife, I cut the bondera to size:

And lay the bondera on the surface to make sure it fit appropriately, which it did, YAY!:

Then you take one of the sticky pull tabs and attach it to the plastic lining of the back side of the bondera that will be attaching to the surface:

Pull it just part way down in a semi-diagonal, semi-straight down fashion:

Then attach the sticky part to the surface and little by little pull the tab down gradually from behind while pressing the sticky bondera to the surface so it attaches firmly:

Then I cleaned my tiles before I took off the top plastic lining:

Then you can take off the top plastic lining (this is a bit easier and less awkward):

Then you can start laying your tiles:

Remember to use your spacers in between tiles:

After I stuck on all the tiles, I was able to grout immediately.

So I mixed some up:

And I slapped it on (more detailed explanation of grouting here and here) and cleaned it up with a huge clean damp sponge:

Then I created a stencil and painted some Spanish-style tiles, sprayed some clear coat over it to protect the paint, and put the wood framing around it.

I wrote all about the details on how to complete the stenciled tiled project with frame at Sheila’s blog, Beyond the Cookie Cutter. Click here to go see it!

So here’s the before of the fence by our entryway gate:

And after adding a nice personal touch to welcome our guests, and give our other alley neighbors something pretty to look at:

I’ll leave you with that. Make sure you go see my guest post at Sheila’s blog, and enter to win the giveaway. Here are the prizes and the instructions again:
