Kitchen Remodel Day 14 – Upper Cabinets

Home Remodel Time

Kyle and I are about to head on out for a 4 day excursion to Santa Cruz to see one of my favorite college friends get hitched with a great guy! So before we go, I wanted to give you another kitchen remodel post.

After we installed the base cabinets, we Kyle put up the upper cabinets, and we created the microwave vent and put the microwave up, and put the stove, fridge, and dishwasher in place. Since Kyle installed most of the cabinetry, I got the “easy” task of putting all the pulls on the cabinets, which was fun, but come to think of it, it’s really not that easy to drill perfectly straight holes through a cabinet so the pulls don’t screw in crooked. But it all worked out great.

Kitchen cabinets are supposed to be 16″ above the countertops, but when we lined up the tops of the cabinets above the microwave and fridge level with the top of the others, the microwave was way too close to the stove, and we also felt there was not enough room above the fridge in case anyone wanted to put a larger/taller fridge there later. So, although it does kind of look weird having the microwave and fridge cabinets higher, that was the compromise we had to make. If we put the other cabinets as high as those, that would have been awkwardly high for those, so this was all we could come up with. When you strategically place decorative kitchen stuff up on top of all the cabinets, it’s not very noticeable at all, so once we staged the house it looked just fine. That’s why there’s a large bowl up there. That helped us see that it would look okay once we had some decor up there.

After that, here’s the list of what we had left to do in the kitchen:

  • paint
  • cover back of island to make it look more finished
  • install lighting
  • countertop
  • kitchen faucet
  • backsplash
  • kickboards
  • cabinet trim
  • flooring
  • floor moulding

Brilliant job. Had you considered cupboards all the way to the ceiling? We will be renovating our kitchen in the near future. Here is what it looks like now: http://ideaswoman.com/ikea4.png . It is a 1960’s beach house in Australia.

Thanks! Yes, that was definitely a consideration. The main thing that would stop us is the price. So we just stuck with the shorter ones.
