An Ocean Lover’s Home Office

After we finished the master bathroom, I got right on to fixing up the office.

Here are some before photos of the office:

This room didn’t have a closet, so I built one for added storage space. Also that would make this a real 3 bedroom house (I don’t know about other states, but in California, if a bedroom doesn’t have a closet, it technically can’t be called a bedroom) so a closet would increase the value and desirability of the house a bit.

First I had to smooth the textured walls with joint compound and a “puddy knife”. If you don’t already know, Kyle and I decided back at the beginning that we wanted smooth, not textured walls. The texture on the walls was poorly done, so it looked really bad. We decided to smooth all the walls (but leave the ceilings textured because smoothing out the ceiling would have been almost literal hell). It’s super hard to do things above your head, have you experienced that? The arms ache after just a few seconds and for some reason you lose your breath too.

Once I smoothed, then sanded, then smoothed, then sanded again, I then cleaned the walls off of any dust and started painting, yay!

I worked on one half of the room at a time because we had so much stuff in there. That way I would only have to move stuff once, instead of 3 or 4 times for each step.

So this is the start of the first half of the office. Ready to see the color we chose?

Then when I finished that entire side of the room (smoothing, sanding, painting), I had to move all our stuff to the other side of the room and smooth, sand, and paint that half.

Here’s our “junk”:

Now here I am scraping off some of the joint compound to smooth it out. Yep, I’m in my pajamas. I was so eager to get this done that I didn’t even change into some work clothes.

After I was done sanding and cleaning the walls, I painted the rest of the room:

We still had to do the floor in this room, and I had to finish off the closet I built by putting some moulding around the frame.

After we did those things, the office would be pretty much done. So stay tuned for when we put in the new floors because the floor we chose goes in the entire rest of the house! 🙂

I like how the office kind of has a nautical feel with the blue and white.

What do you think of the color we chose for the office?

We’re not done yet. Stay tuned for more office improvements!

Thanks Vicki, just a few more steps and I’ll probably have the finished room up in a week or two 🙂

Good luck with your office too!

  2. That color is incredible! Especially paired with all the white woodwork 🙂 🙂 I would never be brave enough to go so dark!

I typically only go with neutrals, but that wanescoting really inspired me, so I wanted to go with a nautical feel 🙂
