So after we painted and did all the dirty work that could possibly ruin new carpet, we finally got some fresh carpet in the master bedroom. We decided upon carpet because I told Kyle that I can’t be barefoot on hard floors because you can feel every speck of dust beneath your feet. He agreed and we went to Home Depot and got the cheapest nicest stuff we could find.
There are only two things on this entire house and Kyle and I did not do with our own four hands (besides occasional assistance from Kyle’s parents and Rachel on things like painting).
One thing we did not do was install carpet in our bedroom. The other thing was install our countertops. So, the two C’s we did not do ourselves. Everything else accomplished on our house we did ourselves. Hooray for DIY and saving money!!!
When you order carpet there are a few weeks of waiting because you have to schedule for the guys to come out and measure. Then you have to schedule for the guys to come out and install the carpet. We chose Thoroughbred Chestnut carpet which I’m pretty sure is still available at Home Depot at a cheap price. It was only 79 cents a sq ft plus $73 for installation which we figured was a deal because we weren’t confident in our abilities to really get that carpet on good, and who knows how long it would have taken us to cut it and install it, not to mention simply getting the carpet from Home Depot to our house. Kyle has a Porche 944 and I was currently driving a Toyota Corolla. So we paid for installation. There are times when investing a little more money can go a long way. Sometimes it just makes sense.
So Thoroughbred Chestnut is a beige color like the wall, but not a perfect match to our wall color, though. That’s the problem when choosing things based on a little paint chip. We used the Glidden Bonjour Beige paint strip to judge all the carpet colors to choose one that went well with it, but it turns out it looks much different on a larger scale. But I figured putting up floor moulding would help hide the fact that these two beiges don’t go together.
So here you get a good look of the carpet, plus the closed French doors (It’s raining outside).
It was cold, so we had our little portable heater on while we enjoyed the fresh carpet.
You can also see the trim we put on the windows and you can see that the old black framed window on the right has foggy glass (which is permanently foggy looking). That’s why we had to replace that glass later. We just put it off for a very long time (May 2011).
We were so excited for this step to be done because this meant we were really close to getting to move into the master bedroom with our bed and all our stuff. I decided to crawl around on the carpet to get the full experience.
Kitty was confused and didn’t know what the heck I was doing.
“Come here Kitty, it’s okay. You can walk on the carpet. It won’t hurt you!”
Oh and by the way, this photo gives you a good view of our closet and the strange cubby hole inside. We took the closet doors off the closet because for one thing I think there was only one out of the two left. Second, it was ugly.
Kyle decided to do carpet angels. We had a great time!
It was such a fantastic day!
We have a couple more days left talking about the Master Bedroom and doing all the finishing touches. By Friday you will see the fully staged “perfect as it’s ever gonna get” photos
Come back tomorrow and see some more DIY goodness!
And just for fun, here’s a picture of Kitty out on our balcony:
You can see the pile of wood (bottom left) from the demolition we had to do on the house to make room for the French doors.

I’m such a sucker for cute kitty pictures! I totally feel you on the feeling every piece of dirt/sand/dust underfoot with wood floors. We have wood in every room but the kitchen and bathroom, and those are tiled. The only carpet we have is up the stairs to the master bedroom. All that tile and wood is cold on your feet in Nebraska winters! But Andy had a non-negotiable about the wood, and I like the way it looks, so I supplement with rugs.

yeah, rugs should fix the dust-under-the-feet problem
whaaa? you installed carpet before baseboards???? YOU REBELS!

yep. that’s just how we wanted to do it. I know most people say to do baseboard first, but we wanted to do carpet first.
I love new carpet!!

me too! it sucks that carpet doesn’t last very long though. it seems like it should be replaced like every year or something to keep the freshness and fluffiness!
